MHACY administers a Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) Program, and under that program over 2,700 apartments are leased by our participants in units owned by over 800 private landlords. Participants are selected from the Section 8 Waiting List. The program is administered in accordance with MHACY’s Administrative Plan, which is available by clicking here.
All participants must comply with the program requirements, including completing their annual certification, accommodating Housing Quality Standards inspections, allowing property owners to make any needed repairs, and adhering to the terms of their lease. MHACY does not permit discrimination of any kind. If an individual with a disability requires an accommodation, such as an accessible feature, a live-in aide, or a modification to a MHACY policy, an application should be filed under MHACY’s Reasonable Accommodations Policy. A Reasonable Accommodation application form may be obtained from your case worker, or by clicking here.
The Violence against Women Act of 2013 (VAWA) provides special protections for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking who participate in a federally subsidized housing program, including the Section 8 program. To learn more about VAWA, click here.
A family’s housing needs change over time with changes in family size, job locations, and for other reasons. To file an application to add a family member to your voucher, click here.
The housing choice voucher program is designed to allow families to move without the loss of housing assistance. Moves within and outside of Yonkers are permissible as long as the family notifies MHACY ahead of time, terminates its existing lease within the lease provisions, and finds acceptable alternate housing. Click here to access MHACY’s Moving Procedures Guidelines, and click here to view available rental units. To assist participants in the relocation process MHACY has developed a model Notice of Intent to Vacate form, which you can access by clicking here. All Section 8 participants are encouraged to speak with their caseworker before commencing the relocation process.
Section 8 participants who reside outside Yonkers and wish to move into a Yonkers apartment should ask their local case worker to send their Portability paperwork to:
The Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers 1511 Central Park Avenue PO Box 35 Yonkers, NY 10710 Phone 914-793-8400 Fax 914-793-9117 Attn: Portability Specialist
To ensure the integrity of its Housing Choice Voucher Program MHACY has enacted policies designed to prevent, detect, investigate and resolve instances of program abuse or fraud. All applicants and participants are advised of their reporting requirements, which can be reviewed by clicking here. If you have knowledge of a fraud, or any other corrupt or criminal act committed in connection with the Section 8 program, you can file a report by clicking here.
